= to be hopeless, to be in trouble, stuck , trapped

* Based on the idea of being in a small boat, and not having a paddle to move it.

Ex:  After investing all my money in a business that has failed, I am “up a creek  without a paddle.”

Ex:  After losing my job, I can’t pay my rent, so I’m “up the creek without a paddle.”
