Off the Hook
(multiple meanings)
1) = cool
* Modern phrase, similar to the phrase “off the chain”
It is referring to something being so “fresh” and “new” that its literally right off the store shelf. (started in reference to clothes, the hangar being the hook.)
Ex: Those shoes are “off the hook.”
Ex: This party is “off the hook!” I’m have a great time.
2) = get away with something , not responsible for something
*Originated from a fish “off the hook” gets away)
Ex: I thought we were going to be in trouble for breaking the window, but they didn’t care, so we’re “off the hook.”
Ex: After my sister broke up with her fiancĂ©, I was “off the hook” for buying a wedding present.
3) = If a phone has not been hung up (call ended and phone turned off) then we say it is “off the hook.”
Ex: I tried to call you, but I kept getting a busy signal. Maybe your phone was “off the hook.”
If a phone is ringing “off the hook” it means it is ringing constantly.
